ACK!

This episode starts with Sat morning. I sit with Magpie waiting for Jackie to arrive so we can take my desk to the Salvation Army (whom I could not book a pick up with because they kept misdirecting me on the phone, you would think an organization that you want to donate to would be more helpful.) Jackie arrives, Magpie promptly hides like he always does, but we are going to breakfast at 930 and my dad is coming to load up at 12, there will be time between those two events to coral him, right? Jackie and I positioned the screen door open so that we could get the desk out hassle free. We do so. Of course then we leave the doors (both screen and regular) open as we happily go off to breakfast.

We come back to find my Dad and my brother in my apartment (so if Magpie was hiding there is no way he is coming out now.) Now, I know my cat, he hates the outdoors, he would not stand outside for five minutes for all the moths he could eat. Trust me, in his world that means a lot! I know he is not outside and that he is hiding inside the apartment still, but since the door was open everyone is convinced he got out. We load the truck thinking I will just wait for him to poke his head out after they are loaded up and can head for home. We go out to lunch. I think this is perfect he will be all alone and come out, nope. My dad and brother leave with most of my stuff.

I try to load the rest of my stuff into my car. I trip going down the stairs and twist my ankle. It hurts. It eventually ends up swollen like I have an egg inside my ankle. Perfect for moving.

The guys who are moving into the apartment show up. They want to move in now. They have a truck full of stuff and they have to bring the truck back to its owner really soon. So I tell them to go ahead, thinking maybe atleast their moving might shell shock the cat into trying to escape. Nope. The guy’s mother shows up to clean the apartment for him. Yes, a 21 year old still needs his mother to clean up for him.

Then my friend Sandy shows up. She has heard about my trouble from my post on Ravelry and wants to lend emotional support. Then dude’s Mom comes out and yells at me for the mess in the apartment rather rudely. Sandy comes to my defense like a knight in shining armor, but dude’s mom is too full of snotty anger to be mollified. I ignore her. Max, Sandy’s son helps look for Magpie around the yard. They leave.

I got back upstairs to try and get Magpie out again. I get yelled at again. I try to explain to her that I will not communicate with a hysterical screaming woman, but she scoffs. I gather my belonging and go to wait outside. I called the landlord, left a message. I then called her son to warn him about the incident. Then the crazy lady came out and apologized. Started complaining that her son hadn't told her the whole deal and that she was really upset with him. She tried again to help me look for Magpie, and then said maybe it would help if I waited outside. (Oh you mean like I told you it would before you bit my head off, yeah probably!) But all I said was yes it would.

No luck yet. I go to have dinner at my friend Jackie’s house. I needed a break from the scene at the apartment. Later Jackie and I go back to try and find Magpie. Nobody is home, the door is open, there is a candle burning inside waiting to burn the house down. Jackie has the genius idea to tip the stove to see if he is back there. She spies a lump of black fur that very distinctly resembles a cat. We poke him with a broom. No movement. We try to drag him out with the broom. Not happening. We finally slide the stove away from the wall, I climb behind it, reach in, retrieve a very unhappy cat. Success! I triumphantly put him in the carrier start out for MA.

Then we have the whole tire incident. On 95 my tire goes. I call AAA, and wait and wait and wait. The guy comes, changes my tire, and tells me I can’t go to MA on a spare. Awesome. I drive over to Sears, it closed an hour ago. I call the infamous Jackie, and she comes to my rescue. Magpie and I spend the night with her.

In the morning, after significant effort is made in extracting Magpie from the box spring of  Jackie’s spare room, we drove back to Sears, and had a lovely walk around the mall while we waited to have my tire fixed. The trip was punctuated with Jackie realizing she lost her purse just after the car was fixed and we were about to go. Since Jackie had Jordan with her, I dashed into and all over the mall until I found a security guard with the purse. Proved to her that I was not just trying to steal the grubby, old, cloth purse Jackie carries around with her. Ran back to Jackie, and finally set off for Massachusetts. But Maine was not ready to let go that easy.

On 95 in York, my engine light goes on. I take the next exit, find a gas station with a garage, and the guys says if its oil or water he can help, but if not then no. He tells me the water is low, so he adds more. I turn back on the engine, I cross fingers and hold breath and voila the engine light goes off. (Well, a few minutes later it does anyways.) I thank the helpful gas attendant and proceed on my way.

I got home with no incident from there. We then set off with the intention of stopping in New York and arriving in Canada tomorrow. So here I sit in the hotel bathroom, yes Sarah you know exactly where I am sitting. Why? Because it is the only room with no place to hide, and I wanted to give Magpie a chance to stretch his legs and get some water because he refuses to drink while in the carrier. Of course about 20 miles before we stopped the engine light is back on, which I tried to fix by adding oil. Now according to my dad it has too much oil, and we are still over a hundred miles away from destination.

In the morning we head for Canada. Of course my landlord works tomorrow and won’t be able to meet us until 5, so it will be a very late evening for those driving back if it turns out my roommate to be is not going to be home. The saga continues...
Me and Magpie on the floor of the bathroom in a hotel in NY. How did we end up here you ask? Read below.
